“remember”
“Proportions, composition, brushwork” – this, and only this, was what our professors emphasized when teaching us fine arts. Our generation ever since has been perceiving but fragments of culture, and thus we have been responding to recent times with very ambiguous answers.
I always bear these incomplete shadows in mind, especially our lacking comprehension for the meaning of Western art works. Whatever I paint, I transmit a meaning without using explicit words, as for reality being reflected in a different way.
“Remember” is a series of about 100 oil paintings; a selection of representing Western masterpieces, that contributed to contemporary Chinese art, are painted as faint shadows and are (not) more than the background of the canvas.
